CHAPTER SEVEN
âI WISH YOU didnât have to do this, Jessie.â Ben was troubled, impatiently pacing the floor of the apartment. âWhy should you have to act as his girlfriend? Letâs face it, I didnât do anything wrong, so I donât see why you have to go along with this trickery. It isnât fair.â
âFairness doesnât come into it. It was either that or José was going to call the policeâI explained all that to you. Iâm okay with this, Ben. You donât need to worry about me.â She swiftly checked her appearance in the mirror and then looked around for her handbag.
Ben frowned. âI canât help it. I owe you so much already.â
She laid a reassuring hand on his arm. âItâs not going to be a problem, Ben.â She wasnât sure that was the absolute truth, but she didnât want her brother to worry. Inside, though, she felt a flutter of anxiety, strangely mixed in with a kind of pleasurable anticipation. Joséâs kiss had stayed with her for a long time... Even now, she remembered the thrill of his encircling arms, the feel of his long body firmly pressed against hers and the gentle brush of his lips on her mouth and on her throat and bare shoulders.
A rush of heat ran through her body and she made an effort to pull herself together before the memories could lead her further astray. âAnyway,â she murmured, âIâm only going with him to the plantation today. Itâs not as though weâre going to be alone. His grandfatherâs worried because thereâs some sort of problem with the crop, and José has to look in on a couple of the workers while heâs over there. He thought it would be a good opportunity for me to meet his grandfather.â She glanced out of the window and saw Joséâs car pulling up in the street outside the apartment. âHeâs here,â she said. âI should go.â
âWell, you take care, and donât let him push you into anything you donât want.â
âI will. Itâll be fine.â
Sliding into the passenger seat beside José a minute or so later, she sent him a quick glance as he set the car in motion once more. He was immaculately dressed, in sand-coloured trousers and a crisp shirt that was open at the neck. His hands rested on the steering wheel, his skin lightly bronzed, with a smattering of dark hair along his forearms. There was a gleaming gold watch on his wrist. Just looking at him made her heart begin to thud and her body tingle.
âYou said your grandfather phoned you this morning,â she said softly, trying to get things back on an even keel. âHe must be very concerned to ask you to go over there.â He nodded, his blue glance moving appreciatively over her before he returned his attention to the road ahead. Warm colour washed through her cheeks under that brief, but thorough, scrutiny. She was wearing blue jeans and a sleeveless top that flattered her curves, and her long hair fell in a silky curtain over her shoulders.
