CHAPTER SEVEN

‘I WISH YOU didn’t have to do this, Jessie.’ Ben was troubled, impatiently pacing the floor of the apartment. ‘Why should you have to act as his girlfriend? Let’s face it, I didn’t do anything wrong, so I don’t see why you have to go along with this trickery. It isn’t fair.’

‘Fairness doesn’t come into it. It was either that or José was going to call the police—I explained all that to you. I’m okay with this, Ben. You don’t need to worry about me.’ She swiftly checked her appearance in the mirror and then looked around for her handbag.

Ben frowned. ‘I can’t help it. I owe you so much already.’

She laid a reassuring hand on his arm. ‘It’s not going to be a problem, Ben.’ She wasn’t sure that was the absolute truth, but she didn’t want her brother to worry. Inside, though, she felt a flutter of anxiety, strangely mixed in with a kind of pleasurable anticipation. José’s kiss had stayed with her for a long time... Even now, she remembered the thrill of his encircling arms, the feel of his long body firmly pressed against hers and the gentle brush of his lips on her mouth and on her throat and bare shoulders.

A rush of heat ran through her body and she made an effort to pull herself together before the memories could lead her further astray. ‘Anyway,’ she murmured, ‘I’m only going with him to the plantation today. It’s not as though we’re going to be alone. His grandfather’s worried because there’s some sort of problem with the crop, and José has to look in on a couple of the workers while he’s over there. He thought it would be a good opportunity for me to meet his grandfather.’ She glanced out of the window and saw José’s car pulling up in the street outside the apartment. ‘He’s here,’ she said. ‘I should go.’

‘Well, you take care, and don’t let him push you into anything you don’t want.’

‘I will. It’ll be fine.’

Sliding into the passenger seat beside José a minute or so later, she sent him a quick glance as he set the car in motion once more. He was immaculately dressed, in sand-coloured trousers and a crisp shirt that was open at the neck. His hands rested on the steering wheel, his skin lightly bronzed, with a smattering of dark hair along his forearms. There was a gleaming gold watch on his wrist. Just looking at him made her heart begin to thud and her body tingle.

‘You said your grandfather phoned you this morning,’ she said softly, trying to get things back on an even keel. ‘He must be very concerned to ask you to go over there.’ He nodded, his blue glance moving appreciatively over her before he returned his attention to the road ahead. Warm colour washed through her cheeks under that brief, but thorough, scrutiny. She was wearing blue jeans and a sleeveless top that flattered her curves, and her long hair fell in a silky curtain over her shoulders.
